Introduction - the SEED Earth Matters unit of work.

In Brief: Using the online resources within the Student Portal, students will investigate the earth resources needed to create a popular product. It is expected that students will need about  6 - 8 lessons (50 minutes duration each) to complete this module, including presenting the results of their investigations to their peers.

Process: Using the Students' Task pages as a guide, students will need to investigate diverse sources relevant to the resource they select for investigation. This information gathering phase should take 4-5 lessons and students will need internet access.

Assessment:  Preparing  leaflets, posters, animations, PowerPoint, etc. will take considerable time so allow at least  2 - 3 lessons for this. Students can present their investigations to their peers as most would choose  quite different commodities.

Evaluation: The grades and comments in the assessment process will provide feedback to the students about their success in the task from the perspectives of their peers and teachers. It is also important for them to think about how they managed the task, the skills that they used and the new skills that they developed. Including a series of reflective paragraphs in their assessment requirements will encourage them to do this.

This module requires The Minerals Council of Australia interactive program Down to Earth – Metals Matter. A link to the program is included in the Students' Task pages - or if you wish to install the program you can download it using the link below. You will need the latest version of Flash Player to use the program.
