
The South Australian mine industry has raised over $100,000 for blood cancer research and free patient services in the inaugural Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave Mine Challenge. Fourteen sites participated across the state, with more than 6,000 people including contractors taking part.
At a recent function, The Hon Paul Holloway MP, Minister for Mineral Resources Development presented awards to highest fundraisers Oxiana Ltd ($29,875) and Beverley Uranium Mine ($22,945). Australian Zircon received the award for the most innovative fundraising idea for holding a silent auction for die-cast models of mining vehicles.
Simon Matthias, Leukaemia Foundation General Manager SA&NT said the South Australian mining industry had enthusiastically embraced the Mine Challenge. “The Leukaemia Foundation raised a record $1million in SA & NT in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. This was made possible by the participation of the mining industry and the endorsement and ongoing support of Minister Holloway.”
To be held at the Hilton Adelaide, “In it for the long haul: Sustaining HSE&C in Resources & Construction” is a one-day conference for industry professionals focusing on occupational health, safety, environment and community issues.
The conference will canvass a broad range of health and safety topics, including the latest regulatory requirements, well-being programs for employees, and environmental and security considerations in the workplace.

The workshop will include presentations from industry, Government and public representatives all giving their views on the importance of community engagement.
The aim is to achieve agreement to the implementation of a code, or guiding principles, between Government and industry on community engagement and to the concept of third party accreditation of those community engagement practices.

The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy is hosting a uranium information day to follow on from The AusIMM International Uranium Conference for 2008. This free event will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre and is open to the public.
The uranium information day aims to give people outside the industry the opportunity to learn about current practices and technologies, and to discuss the importance of implementing technical solutions to mitigate challenges such as environment impact, energy sustainability, radioactivity and non-proliferation.
Experts will be on hand to answer any questions people may have. Displays and materials will be available to enhance the learnings and for those seeking deeper understanding about the industry.

Shave or colour your hair and raise money for the Mine Challenge! Participating sites will compete against each other for the first time in South Australia. The Leukaemia Foundation has set a target of $150,000 to be raised in the 2008 Mine Challenge with those funds going to support patients and research projects in South Australia.
